This is the last stone on Dr. Rudge's 'Puddingstone Track' that he saw personally. The 10 others beyond it, heading into Wiltshire, were reported to him by others in his later years, and he never visited them personally.
Most of this stone (conglomerate, not true Herts puddingstone) is below the surface, with the visible portion measuring 1.7m x 1.5m x 0.5m high. It can be found just north of the road between Stoke Row and Witheridge Hill - in private woodland, but easily accessible as it's only about 5 metres from the roadside.
Rudge described this stone as "a real beauty, with a legend" - but he never detailed the legend, and I can find no record of it. I suspect it was a misunderstanding of the story that, in the early years of the 20th century, local men tried to use chains and a steam engine to pull the stone out of the ground, but it refused to move. This probably mutated into a tale attached to many large stones, that it was 'immovable'.
It probably would have messed up the line of his Track if Rudge had known about the other puddingstones not far away, in Greyhone Wood and just west of Bromsden Farm. Not to mention the fact that all these stones were probably dug up from the numerous old chalkpits that used to dot the landscape hereabouts.
[As Willowman says really only of curiosity value as the puddingstone trail is really quite dubious as an idea - but fascinating nonetheless. Do a search for puddingstone trail to find the others - MegP Ed]
