Anne T visited on 10th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Rolleston Cross: This was our first stop on our way down to Dartmoor. Having stopped off in Newark for a very early breakfast, we arrived in Rolleston at 08:30, only to find (not surprisingly!) that the church had not yet been opened. After having photographed the sun dial in the churchyard of Holy Trinity, we walked up to find this old village cross, which I completely missed the first time round, as it blended in with the surrounding pavement and benches! The very sad remains of an old village cross, but another site to have ticked off the list. By the time we'd photographed this cross stump, we walked back to Holy Trinity to find it now open.

Rolleston Cross
Rolleston Cross submitted by Anne T : Close up of the stump of the Rolleston Village Cross. Pastscape tells us it once had shields carved into it, although these are no longer visible, and they do not tell us who these belonged to. Dated to the 14th century, the local stocks were once said to be nearby. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross in Nottinghamshire

The remains of this village cross are recorded as Historic England List ID 1370182 and Pastscape Monument No. 322421. It is located at the junction of Fiskerton Road, Staythorpe Road and Station Road, more or less in the centre of Rolleston village.

The 0.5-0.6m tall stump of this cross shaft are dated by Historic England to the 14th century, and there is debate about it being associated with a market in the village. Pastscape tells us that the base was once carved with shields (although they do not state whose).

The stump is now mounted within a modern, circular paved area and has lead flashing around its base to hold it in place. Without the grid reference, we might have walked straight by this old cross.

Rolleston Cross
Rolleston Cross submitted by Anne T : The cross as seen in its immediate surroundings. Photo taken a few metres to its south east, looking towards the junction of Fiskerton Road, Staythorpe Road and Station Road (the latter runs down to Holy Trinity church). I found it very interesting that the red telephone box had been re-designed as the local information point! (Vote or comment on this photo)

Rolleston Cross
Rolleston Cross submitted by Anne T : At first sight, it's easy to miss the stump of this old village cross, as the area in which it sits is busy with benches, bollards (at the entrance to the small park behind) and telegraph poles, etc. The remains of the cross shaft sit in the middle of a circular paved area, with the stump secured in place with concrete and lead flashing.
