Petersfield Heath Barrows
Petersfield Heath Barrows submitted by jimit : Petersfield Heath Barrows (Vote or comment on this photo)
Barrow Cemetery in Hampshire comprising 15 bowl barrow, four saucer barrows, one disc arrow and a bell barrow.

On consulting a large scale map of the heath, or indeed walking on the heath, you will see set among the trees around the lake a number of round man-made mounds. Some are easily visible, for example those surrounding the cricket pitch, but others in the denser scrub are harder to find. The mounds represent the burial sites of people who lived during the Early Bronze Age, around 2000-1800BC
There are at present some 21 mounds or barrows visible, representing a number of different styles. Not all of the mounds are the same size or height and some are quite difficult to find because they are either in thick scrub/woodland, or are very slight.
The Petersfield barrow cemetery is an important lowland group and has representatives of the following types of round barrow
Bell barrow
Bowl Barrow
Saucer barrow
Pond barrow
Disk barrow

The 'People of the Heath' project is now in it's final year and has investigated the Petersfield Barrow Cemetery with many interesting finds. The last season of excavation will be from 27th June to 15th July and this talk will discuss the project so far and the aims of the 2017 dig. The director, George Anelay, will be our speaker.

More details about the project can be found on the website: http://www.peopleoftheheath.com

People of the Heath by Andy B on Friday, 27 January 2017

A community project hosted by the Petersfield Museum to understand and conserve Petersfield’s prehistoric barrows.

This four-year project is focussed on a remarkable but little-known prehistoric monument complex on the edge of Petersfield Town dating to the Early Bronze Age, between 2200 and 1500 BC. Although designated as Scheduled Ancient Monuments, the large group of barrows (burial and ritual monuments) spread across Petersfield Heath has seen no active research since it was mapped in the 1930s and there is no record at all of any past excavations. Yet it is one of the most impressive and diverse barrow cemeteries to have survived in south-east England, boasting at least 21 monuments representing five or six different types.

Burial urn found on Petersfield Heath
    May 19, 2016 | by Kathrin Pieren

In this fourth season of excavations on Petersfield Heath two of the three sites excavated had points of particular interest. The most exciting find is a presumed burial urn found under Barrow 8 close to its centre. The urn was placed in a tightly fitting pit, and the archaeologists and volunteers had to painstakingly excavate it and lift it complete with its contents for laboratory micro-excavation. Its full story will only be revealed over the coming months, but it is already clear that it is a Collared Urn, a ceramic type dating roughly to 2000 – 1500 BC. Collared Urn burials are not uncommon in the Early Bronze Age, but the Barrow 8 example seems to have associated organic objects. These could be further rare and significant finds to add to the mineral-replaced wooden handle from Barrow 13 and the half tree-trunk from Site 24.

I no longer live there, but I grew up in this town in the 1970s. Always knew the barrows were there, but no one seemed to know much about them. I don't know if there have been any archeological investigations.

I found this a delightful site, the little sandy heath has groups of trees, woodland groves, open grassy areas , a cricket pitch encircled by barrows and a beautiful lake. There are so many monuments here that it is quite a piece of detective work to locate them all. Their condition varies, some are well preserved while others are more damaged, probably due to the type of material they are made from. Disabled access is excellent as much of the site is relatively flat with grass paths and there is a Millennium Walk laid out around the lake.
