Thornborough Mounds between Buckingham and Milton Keynes are a pair of 2nd Century burial mounds. During this period, wealthy landowners looked towards the past to establish a claim on the land. By mimicking the burial traditions of the Bronze and Iron Age, these mounds would have indicated a historic lineage and legitimate ownership of the land.

This is why this type of monument is typically situated to be visible from routes and trackways, a bold display of longstanding occupancy, whether or not that was actually true. A series of cremation burials in intricate glass and clay vessels were found nearby, beneath what is now the A421 lay-by, indicating the sanctity of this spot. Not so much now...especially after dark.

The meadow was a delight, filled with speedwell, stitchworts, red clover and buttercups. There was also a near perfect fairy ring made obvious by giant horse mushrooms. In such an ancient, undisturbed meadow, it was beguiling to consider how old the fairy ring might actually be.

Close by is an abandoned medieval bridge, which has since been bypassed by the A421. Just beyond the bridge in the neighbouring field, a Celtic/Romano temple was discovered alongside the river. This is the narrowest part of the river and was thought to be a ford before the bridge was built. Many coins, pottery, and even an idol of Isis have been found in the river, thought to be offerings for safe passage. Despite the incessant thrum of traffic from the main road, this did feel like a particularly ancient place. I flipped a penny into the fish-filled stream, and we headed home.

In The Old Gaol museum, Buckingham, are the Roman finds from the mounds which were excavated in 1839, on public display.

from information in the roman roads of the south east midlands the barrows are registered as roman.

there is a Romano British settlement within a short distance and a temple and i have found some remains of a roman ford close by.

there is a roman road that comes from the east at magiovinium (dropshort/ fenny stratford) heading in a direction due west to Finmere possibly further to banbury or even stratford upon avon.

the romans did like to place tumuli close to their roads with exaplmes at stevenage, adwell cop by the romanised Icknield way in oxfordshire and bartlow in suffolk.
