Anne T visited on 10th May 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Rolleston Cross: This was our first stop on our way down to Dartmoor. Having stopped off in Newark for a very early breakfast, we arrived in Rolleston at 08:30, only to find (not surprisingly!) that the church had not yet been opened. After having photographed the sun dial in the churchyard of Holy Trinity, we walked up to find this old village cross, which I completely missed the first time round, as it blended in with the surrounding pavement and benches!
The very sad remains of an old village cross, but another site to have ticked off the list. By the time we'd photographed this cross stump, we walked back to Holy Trinity to find it now open.
The remains of this village cross are recorded as Historic England List ID 1370182 and Pastscape Monument No. 322421. It is located at the junction of Fiskerton Road, Staythorpe Road and Station Road, more or less in the centre of Rolleston village.
The 0.5-0.6m tall stump of this cross shaft are dated by Historic England to the 14th century, and there is debate about it being associated with a market in the village. Pastscape tells us that the base was once carved with shields (although they do not state whose).
The stump is now mounted within a modern, circular paved area and has lead flashing around its base to hold it in place. Without the grid reference, we might have walked straight by this old cross.
