Bevis Thumb submitted by paulcall : This long barrow lies just south of a minor road north-east of Compton village. It lies on an east-west axis, and the road cuts into the barrow slightly at the eastern end. It is named after a giant, Bevis of Hampton, who is said to have been able to walk between Southampton and the Isle of Wight without getting his head wet. As described, smooth elongate WNW-ESE feature ~60 x 15 m on Environment Agency lidar (grey icon next to CamRA)

We have just visited Bevis's Thumb and its location is very atmospheric.
Also, it's good to see a long barrow which still has its top soil cover. In the Netherlands all of the long barrows, which can be found in the northern provinces, have their top soil removed which gives a poor representation of what they once looked like.
