Marker Stone in Yorkshire (North)

Located on the western slope of Peat Hill on what was once thought to be the southern tumulus of an adjacent pair. This tumuli is shown on the 1952 OS map but not the 1919 or earlier ones. It is also shown on the 1958 6” OS map however field investigations in 1974 determined that the tumuli were no more than heather covered undulations.

As for the marker stone itself Pastscape implies that it is a boundary stone, which boundary it does not say and none are shown on either old or modern OS maps in this vicinity. A suggestion: Old OS maps show routes going up to old peat pit workings on Cock Heads and whilst this stone is not directly beside these routes it could still have acted as a guide, it stands out quite well amongst the surrounding terrain.
