Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Hampshire

Hope reports a well here, near Petersfield. It is shown on the 1870 OS map north east of the Half Moon pub and north north west of Sheet Bridge. Another is noted by him at nearby Steep in St. Mary’s Hanger but I suspect that they are the same site.

I visited in January 2006. The Good Beer Guide listed pub in the village was closed for repair, so I followed the road out of the village to the east, on to the B2070, past Mill Lane and over the River Rother.

Taking the hint, I went no further, but could see, in the distance, what appeared to be a wishing well type structure, complete with bucket, on the mown lawn between the house and the river.
