Becket's Well
Becket's Well submitted by LizH : Becket's well in Northampton is near the town centre, on a main road. I think it looks better from a distance, although even then to get a photograph you have to wait for the lights to change so there are no cars. This shows the structure housing the well, built in 1843. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Becket's Well
Becket's Well submitted by LizH : Here the structure around the well can be seen. The murals on the walls are based on the drawings of local school children and relate to Thomas A Becket, although of course the well is older. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Becket's Well submitted by LizH : Unfortunately being on a main road in the centre of Northampton, rubbish is dumped in the well. The decoration of the lion's heads is also dirty and the whole impression is of a sad and uncomfortable site.

Beckett’s well is next to a main road in the centre of Northampton. It is a sadly neglected structure, although from a distance it looks OK. The housing for the well was built by the County Council in 1843 and restored in 1984, with murals based on children’s drawings. It is called Becket’s well because Thomas A Becket is supposed to have stopped there on his flight from his trial in Northampton castle.
It is now next to a main road in the city centre, and is difficult to photograph well without standing in the middle of a busy road, only advisable if you have a police escort. It’s best not to think too much about what is in the well, along with rubbish.
