The Lyde Spring
The Lyde Spring submitted by Antonine : 2010 (Vote or comment on this photo)
The spring and pool are in a steep gully situated in Lord Carrington's Lyde Gardens (often open and free to enter) next to the 12th century Holy Trinity Church. The east side of the churchyard overlooks the gully where water from eight springs emerge. The area has been considerably developed with walkways, bridges and a small colonnade at the southern end creating a very peaceful atmosphere.

The name probably derives from the Old English hlud, 'loud' with the meaning 'roaring stream, torrent' suggesting a much more forceful flow of water in earlier times.

The closeness of the Church to the steep banks of the coombe has given rise to the local proverb: ‘They that live and do abide shall see the church fall in the Lyde.’

The Lyde Spring
The Lyde Spring submitted by Antonine : The chasm in which the springs are is situated below Bledlow Parish Church. The name ‘Lyde’ comes from the Old English word for ‘slope’. The springs are said to wear away the chalk on which the village stands, hence the local medieval nursery rhyme: ‘They who live and do abide, Shall see Bledlow Church fall into the Lyde’ (Vote or comment on this photo)

The Lyde Spring
The Lyde Spring submitted by Antonine : This is where the River Lyde rises from springs. The Lyde springs can be found in a deep chasm on the Carrington Estate. The pools originally formed three watercress beds. The garden is private and open daily at the owners disecretion.
