TheCaptain visited on 27th Dec 2013 - their rating: Cond: 2 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Stopped off for a quick look while travelling home after Christmas at my sisters. The weather was foul and everything completely sodden, so didn't spend any time exploring other than driving around the local roads. One to come back to sometime, for a better look for some of the ramparts, and a look round the chateau gardens.
Excavations in 1960 revealed a ditch and double ramparts with dry stone cladding (still two meters high in 1960 in its upper part and estimated originally four meters), the ramparts being reinforced every two meters with piles vertically driven into the ground.
Of the original habitation there is no trace, although Arcisse Caumont has mentioned the discovery of fragments of weapons and a pot containing 180 Gallic coins. It is believed that the modern day (17th century) chateau has been built where the castrum would have been, and that the landscaped gardens added to the destruction.
