Round Cairn in Yorkshire (North)
Three round cairns in a prominent position on Pike Hill with extensive views all round. The west and eastern cairns are quite prominent and stand out clearly. The central cairn is more low lying and depending on the time of the year and depth of the heather can tend to blend in with its surroundings. Indeed the first time I visited these cairns in September 2013 I literally walked right past it and had to backtrack to find it, however on a more recent visit in June 2019 it was clearly visible. Also because of the angle I approached the cairns it stood out on the skyline along with the other two. These cairns are Pastscape Monument 28873 which tells us the following:
Western Cairn at NZ 77206 01316 (my gps) is 28ft diameter in an E-W direction and 30ft diameter in a N-S direction. It is stony cairn 4ft high, probably undisturbed and surmounted by a modern cairn - This modern cairn whilst prominent on my first visit in September 2013 had tumbled down by the time of my most recent visit in June 2019.
Central Cairn at NZ 77281 01328 (my gps) is an undisturbed cairn mainly built of earth and small stones 44 to 48ft in diameter with a kerb of 37ft diameter visible at the south west.
Eastern Cairn at NZ 77338 01310 (my gps) is 32ft diameter in a N-S direction and 36ft in an E-W direction. It is a stony cairn, 5ft high, undisturbed and in good preservation.
Note: These cairns are also Historic England List Entry Number 1003142 however no details about the cairns were given in the List Entry at the time of this sites submission.
