Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Nottinghamshire

Probably the most attractive and well known surviving ancient well in the county. A clean spring arises in a rock lined chamber which is bricked around probably as a worn date suggests in the 1700s. The site is one of the only sites dressed, although probably not traditionally. The last time as shown was in the year 2000. The water of the well was also thought to be healing. It is easily found at the bottom of a sloping area enclosed by a copse just off the road near Ladywell rise.

Update January 2018: The Northern Antquarian (TNA) also features a page for this well - see their entry for Lady Well, Headon, Nottinghamshire, which gives directions for finding this well, together with photographs, a brief archaeology & history and local folklore.

Visited this site 19/05/2013. Not easy to find but managed in the end after asking a lovely couple who lived locally (thank you). Choice was to either wade through waist high stingers or slide down a near vertical cliff (I went for the latter).

The well is no longer dressed but personally I prefer it that way. The keystone clearly states 1718.

We both tasted the water - it was clear and sweet.

Worth the effort; wonderful well/spring.
