Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature in Yorkshire (North)
Marked on the OS map as Raven Stones, they are in a prominent position overlooking Wheeldale Gill and the plantation marked as Bumble Wood on present day maps.
They consist of several erratics piled in a heap, with one of them when viewed from a certain angle, if you have a good imagination looking like a Ravens Head (or maybe not). They lie just to the north of the route of the LYKE WAKE WALK and when walking west to east along this trail the distinctive shape can be clearly seen standing out above the surrounding vegetation (bracken in summer).
Just thinking aloud: There are quite a few heaps / piles of stones on the NY Moors with the name Stone Rook or similar. FRANK ELGEE tells us that Rook evolves from the old Norse hraukr which means a pile or heap of anything, Rooks and Ravens are all part of the Crow family. Maybe this site name just got convoluted over time eg: hraukr – rook – raven – raven stones, anyway its just a thought.
