Anne T visited on 17th Mar 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 4 Anglo Saxon cross fragments, St Michael and All Angels, Harston: Before visiting, I wasn’t able to find out much about the church or the AS stone fragments. I was hoping for a church guide book, but there was nothing. There were newspaper articles and photos of the bell tower and the bells displayed in the bell tower, but nothing was made of the fragments – one in the external east wall, and another in the south porch. Pastscape mentions that the stone in the east wall is possibly part of a cross shaft The church looks very appealing from the outside, being made of warm, yellow stone. Inside it is very Victorian. The only thing of any age appeared to be the stem of the font. Nice to have been able to drop by and photograph the fragments.

St Michael and All Angels (Harston)
St Michael and All Angels (Harston) submitted by Anne T : Ancient cross in Leicestershire and Rutland England. This is the fragment of Anglo Saxon stone embedded in the exterior east wall of the church, immediately underneath the east window. Prof. Rosemary Cramp in her paper "New Directions in the study of Anglo Saxon Sculpture" (page 4) describes this as part of a grave cover. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Cross in Leicestershire and Rutland

The church of St Michael and All Angels in Harston is recorded as Historic England List ID 1295028, which mentions "in (the) porch stands an interlace Saxon stone with cable border".

The church is also recorded as Pastscape Monument 323881, which tells us that "incorporated into the (exterior) east wall is an Anglo Saxon stone".

The stone in the east wall of the church can be seen as you walk through the lych gate and approach the church; it is immediately centred under the east window. The stone in the south porch is next to the interior western wall, but is cemented so close to it, it is possible to see the carving on the back of it, but not to photograph.

Inside the church is the smallest door into the 14th century bell tower we have ever seen. Also, the stem of the font, which looks to be 'modern' (1888) dates to the 15th century.

St Michael and All Angels (Harston)
St Michael and All Angels (Harston) submitted by Anne T : Ancient Cross in Leicestershire and Rutland England. This is the fragment of Saxon stone cemented almost against the western wall of the south porch. The interlace design is crisp and clear, looking as if it could have been done almost recently. The design is almost exactly repeated on the rear side of the stone, with a few variations, although my camera was far too large to get into the small gap... (Vote or comment on this photo)

St Michael and All Angels (Harston) submitted by Anne T : Ancient cross in Leicestershire and Rutland England. Trying to photograph the reverse side of the stone cemented almost against the west wall of the south porch. My camera was too large to get any kind of good photo!
