Kilnwick Percy Hill - Barrow
Kilnwick Percy Hill - Barrow submitted by Runemage : Standing by the fence looking at the mound, no zoom. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This now dished barrow was excavated by J.R. Mortimer, as was every interesting hump and bump in the East Yorkshire landscape.

The field is grazed, mostly by sheep but lately by a fine herd of Belted Galloways. The youngsters of their groups are often to be seen lying in the dished part of the barrow.

On the B1246 about threequarters of the way up Kilnwick Percy Hill going from Pocklington to Warter, on the left, conveniently beside a small layby.

Kilnwick Percy Hill - Barrow
Kilnwick Percy Hill - Barrow submitted by SumDoood : An approach from downslope to the west (and quite possibly from the south too, although I didn't check), will remind the visitor what fine landscapers the barrows' builders were in that, until quite close, the complete barrow(s) would have seemed to be at the top of the slope and probably visible from a long way off. Kilnwick Percy Hill - Barrow
Kilnwick Percy Hill - Barrow submitted by SumDoood : I assume these bumps and mounds are part of the barrow cemetery. It seems the road makers have cut into at least one barrow. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Kilnwick Percy Hill - Barrow
Kilnwick Percy Hill - Barrow submitted by Runemage : Barrow excavated in Mortimer's time and left in its damaged state, the top has caved in. Unusually today there was no livestock, they often like to lie in the recess at the top and admire the view from there over Pocklington Town, then through the Vale of York to the Pennines. I took this approx 11.15am, 29 Dec 2013 and it illustrates perfectly how most of East Yorkshire's ancient landscape remain... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Re: Kilnwick Percy Hill - Nearby Amazing Celtic Shield Discovery by AngieLake on Thursday, 05 December 2019

Another mention of a very important site in the Pocklington area:

"Elaborate 2000-year-old Iron Age shield discovered in an impressive ‘warrior grave’ in Yorkshire is hailed 'the most important British Celtic art object of the millennium'
The so-called warrior grave was unearthed from a housing development in 2017
It contained a chariot, two horses and the remains of the warrior and another
Extensive conservation work has revealed an intricate swirl pattern on the shield
Repairs and sword damage suggest that the armour was not purely ornamental".

This is in the news today, so have tacked it on to this nearby site for now:

Buried Iron Age fighter 'speared like a hedgehog' found in newly-unearthed 2,500-year-old 'migrant camp' in east Yorkshire

"The site was discovered on a housing development in Pocklington
It will allow the largest study of an Iron Age population in last 35 years
Excavation already revealed objects including a sword, shield and spears
It includes more than 75 square pits with skeletons from the Arras Culture"
"The buried Iron Age fighter found in the newly-unearthed 2,500-year-old migrant camp was said to have been 'speared like a hedgehog'."

"The remains were found in one of more than 75 skeleton graves in Pocklington, East Yorkshire of people from the Arras Culture - a group which lived in the region in the Middle Iron Age as far back as 800 BC.

In 2014 a housing developer stumbled upon the fossil site and now the ancient settlement is said to be of extreme 'national and international significance'."
