Badshot Lea
Badshot Lea submitted by SolarMegalith : Site of a destroyed Neolithic long barrow at Badshot Lea. According to Pastscape the long barrow has been centred in the background of this photo (photo taken on November 2011). (Vote or comment on this photo)
Long Barrow in Surrey. The remains of a long barrow were observed by Rankine in 1936, in a quarry west of Badshot Farm and immediately east of the railway cutting.

Most of the site had already been quarried away, but rescue excavations revealed enough of the ditches to indicate a barrow some 140 ft long, oriented slightly north of east. Three sherds of Neolithic pottery were found in the primary silting of the south ditch. In the secondary filling of both ditches was a quantity of Neolithic pottery and a few associated flints. A fragment of a polished axe was taken from the north ditch. Rankine also found two flint arrowheads one leaf-shaped and one lozenge-shaped. The importance of this barrow lies in its position as a possible intermediate between the Kent and Wessex Tombs.

With thanks to Exploring Surrey's Past, where there is more of what little is known about the site. They think the barrow may have looked like Belas Knap.

Badshot Lea
Badshot Lea submitted by Andy B : This is the railway cutting very close to long barrow, the site is behind these trees and over to the right. Even though there was nothing to see, it felt worthwhole visiting Badshot Lea long barrow as it is such an important site, the 'missing link' if you like between the Wiltshire and Hampshire long barrows and the Kent group such as Coldrum. I (and some credible archaeologists) are... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Badshot Lea
Badshot Lea submitted by Andy B : The site of Badshot Lea long barrow, which now has Doggy Day Care as its neighbour! The lady here was pleasant and we stayed clear until she had moved the (very barky) dogs in her care. This is "immediately east of the railway cutting" so I think the barrow would have lain along this narrow strip of land (Vote or comment on this photo)

Badshot Lea
Badshot Lea submitted by Andy B : These bushes (and lovely scrap metal) are even more "immediately east of the railway cutting" so this may be the site of the long barrow, although there was apperently no mound remaining. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Neolithic Pottery from Badshot Long-Barrow by Andy B on Saturday, 15 May 2021
(User Info | Send a Message)
Neolithic Pottery from Badshot Long-Barrow. The sherd
here illustrated was found on the surface near the Badshot Long-
Barrow, Farnham, in September, 1939, a short distance from
cutting B3 (see plan : Farnham volume, p. 134).
The sherd is of hard pottery with medium flint backing, the
paste being dark grey and the exterior surface baked to a light
brick colour. The interior surface, baked a rich brown colour,
is smoothed, and through it flint grits protrude. The exterior surface shows traces of wear, but the fractured edges still exhibit an angularity which makes it improbable that the sherd has been
lying on the surface for long. It may perhaps have been lost from the excavation of the Barrow in 1936, but more probably
is to be laid at the door of one of the unreported depredations to which the unexcavated portions have since been subjected by local collectors
