Cocking Down submitted by paulcall : This view from within the field to the north of the South Downs way shows the overgrown barrow and the large round modern stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow(s) in West Sussex

This bowl barrow is found immediately to the north side of the South Downs Way to the west of Cocking village, after a steep uphill walk of about 1 km. It is relatively small, being about 12 metres in diameter, and on the day I visited was barely recognisable as a barrow at all, being covered in nettles. There is a large round stone on the opposite side of the track which is a modern marker for the West Dean Estate, and certainly not ancient. The views down the slope to the north-east are excellent.

Cocking Down
Cocking Down submitted by paulcall : A view looking east along the South Downs Way, with the nettle-laden barrow in the centre. The Way meanders up the other side of the hill to Heyshott Down. Cocking village is at the bottom of the scarp to the left and the modern boundary marker stone is just out of shot on the right. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Cocking Down
Cocking Down submitted by paulcall : A view from the south showing the stone, and the overgrown barrow just behind the two black handles for the electric fence. The ball-shaped stone is about 6 feet in dianmeter, and I really wish it was an ancient standing stone, but it isn't. (Vote or comment on this photo)
