Its name is derived from the Pennocks, tenant farmers at Lins Farm in the 1850’s and the puzzle part from the fact that the grid pattern is likened to a gaming board. Though its origin is speculative it has similarities to carvings on a stone at NZ 82669 02875* which is in close proximity to several cairns in the area to the north, suggesting that they are from the same tradition. It is further speculated that it may have been discovered during one of the barrow openings at Alan Tofts during the nineteen century and brought to the farm as a curiosity.

* This stone at NZ 82669 02875 is designated ‘ALL 5a’in their book and also has cup marks on it as well as the grid pattern.. The Pennock Puzzle Stone is designated ‘ALL 13a’
Note: This stone first shows up on the 1915 OS map, see HERE When the map opens, read if required then close the pop up box which obscures it. Then zoom in towards the centre and locate Beck Hole. Then look just to the east and above the railway line you will see the farm marked Lins with the puzzle stone just marked as ‘stone’ above that. It does not show up on earlier OS maps but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there, just that it wasn’t noted like many other stones.
