Holy Well in Leicestershire and Rutland.
The so-called Wishing Well at Ashwell is situated on the edge of the village.

In the past it has been referred to as the Holy Well, and is presumed to be the 'ash tree well' that gives the village its name.

An inscription above the well reads:

All ye who hither come to drink,
Rest not your thoughts below,
Look at that sacred sign and think
Whence living waters flow.

There are other explanations in the etymology and this is not the only local water... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Wysewoman (comment above) is right about the location, we spend ages looking in the wrong place till we read her post. We visited in August 2021, and though the initial view of the well is enticing, it is silted up and guarded by nettles. I wish the good people of Ashwell would clean it out, get the water flowing again, and make it a proper place of veneration once more. Don't they feel the need for wishes any more??!

Just to say that the first map on this page is off with regards to location. The well is actually on a bend in the yellow road heading South away from Ashwell - where the road forks into two - just SW of the church.

See here for accurate map : http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/149918
