Sacred Spring in Berkshire. Bapsey Pond is located in the grounds of Taplow Court, just downhill from Taplow Mound. It is fed from a sacred spring probably located near the site of the old brewhouse, which was to the north of the House.

The spring and the channel to the pond were culverted over in the early 19th century. The pond was apparently used by St. Birinius for baptisms about 642 AD, hence its name.

See also the Journal of Antiquities's entry for Taeppa’s Low, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, which includes details of this well. The JoA gives us details and poses a question: "200 yards to the north-west of (Taeppa's Low) mound is Bapsey Pond which is actually a holy well associated with St Birinus, bishop of Dorchester, who died in 650 AD. He baptised many converts at the well in 642 AD. The source of the pond comes from the old churchyard where the mound is located. So, maybe there were originally two holy wells here?"

Bapsey Pond submitted by DavidCWoods : Quite a large pond. As well as being fed from the spring there is an outlet stream. (1 comment)
