Round Barrow(s) in Yorkshire (North)
A bronze age round barrow located on the northern part of Levisham Moor about ¼ mile to the west of Gallows Dike, it is about 50m to the north of main track and overlooks the Hole of Horcum*
The barrow is not shown on modern or historical OS maps, probably because according to ‘HERR’ Monument 63234 it wasn’t until 1978 that it was first identified and surveyed. ‘HERR’ also tells us amongst other things that the barrow is 11m in diameter and 0.5m high and that it has been dug out in the centre** during past excavations.
**It appears to me that this excavation is at the north end of the barrow rather than the centre but this maybe (guessing here) because when they dug it out they threw the spoil toward the south end of the barrow, spreading the barrow southward
Historic England also has information on the barrow at List Entry 1019751
* Hole of Horcum or the Devil’s Punchbowl as it is known locally was according to legend created by the Devil himself. The story goes, an old witch had sold her soul to him in return for magical powers. When he came to collect it she did a runner and legged it across the moor. Unable to catch up he gouged out a huge handful of earth and threw it at her. It missed and landed a mile away to form Blakey Topping.
Source on the legend is from a booklet entitled ‘Levisham & Horcum’ A Guide for Adventurers, pages 6-7, published by the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
Confusion – About 50m to the south of this barrow beside the main track at NZ 84477 94037 is a sign which states the following: “Bronze Age Round Barrows – These three barrows were built as burial mounds about 3-4000 years ago for the families of Tribal Chieftains. The hollows on the top are the work of later grave robbers. The surrounding moorland contains other barrows several visible from the main track”
It appears to me that this sign which has been here for quite a few years now has been erected in the wrong place, there is only the one barrow at this location. There are however three prominent barrows close to Gallows Dike ¼ mile to the east, which is where the sign should probably have been erected. Note: These barrows though only ¼ mile away are not visible from the signs present location.
