Brassempouy submitted by Thorgrim : The Ivory Girl of Brassempouy. Palaeolithic. Also known as "The Lady in a Hood". Measuring just 3.7 cms, she was carved from a mammoth's tusk 20,000 years ago. Found in south-west France in 1894. Copy by Peter Herring - one of a series of reproductions of ancient art (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Musée Archéologique in the village of Brassempouy, shows many of the finds within the local caves and shelters, detailing 50,000 years of human occupation. This is of course near to where the renowned female ivory head was found, the world famous "Dame de Brassempouy".
