Julian's Bower
Julian's Bower submitted by rldixon : superb little maze (labyrinth ) with a great view and I was lucky with the weather great sunshine for september (24/9/2009) next time I go I will take my step ladder as a higher viewpoint would be usefull (Vote or comment on this photo)
A rare medieval earth and grass maze, cut into the landscape at Alkborough in north Lincolnshire. A twisting and turning labyrinth of interlocking rings measuring 13.5m (44ft) across. Restored in recent years but the volunteers said they are no closer to solving the mystery of why and when it was made.

What a view! Go on a clear sunny day and you can literally see for miles. The Derbyshire Peak District, York Minster, the power stations lining the Aire...

Julian's Bower
Julian's Bower submitted by DavidRaven : The maze commands a panoramic view over the Humber countryside. Apparently created by medieval monks, it sits adjacent to the site of an older 7-ringed celtic maze (or so the local guide told me!). Also nearby is the old 'Kell Well', now nicely renovated, and a very curious stone in the village churchyard (said to be the remains of a stone cross, carved into a 'spiral' by years of sword sharpenin... Julian and Troy Names by Michael Behrend
Originally published in Caerdroia 27 (1996), p.18-23

In Caerdroia 26, John Wall published a detailed account of Lincolnshire turf mazes.1 Here I would like to add a few odd pieces of information and take up some of the points on which he invites comment.

Mr Wall quotes an ambiguous note about the Alkborough maze (fig.1) that the antiquary Abraham de la Pryme wrote in his diary in 1697: They have at [this] town, as also at Appleby, two Roman games, the one called Gillian’s bore,
and the other Troy’s walls.

Wonderfully well kept & easy to find with information about the well given. Supposed to be haunted as you meditate around the stones ( a young child I believe) in the church entrance there is a copy of the maze on the floor.
Amazing views where 3 rivers meet, countess close earth works a very short distance away (few hundred metres) and a well about a mile/mile 7 half away on the footpath to the left...keep on going, you will find it!
Well worth a visit

The turf maze is very east to find in Alkborough, there is also a copy of the maze in the entrance to the church in the village. The maze itself is very well kept & worth a visit, further along there is Countess Close and another 30 or so minutes walk to your left is a well (not very inspiring though!)

Mysterious maze restored by Andy B on Tuesday, 19 June 2007

Conservationists have described how they have restored a rare medieval earth and grass maze in north Lincolnshire, but said they are no closer to solving the mystery of why and when it was made.

Julian's Bower is cut into the landscape at Alkborough and is a twisting and turning labyrinth of interlocking rings measuring 44ft across.

English Heritage unveiled the reopened monument after a major returfing operation.

wonderfully medatitive, walk the maze and go within, you will be surprised at where you go, if you would just let yourself go and the views are spectacular, the best turf maze I have ever been to. :)
