Holywell (Cranfield)
Holywell (Cranfield) submitted by DavidCWoods : Not looking at its best, the hollow is full of leaves and branches. A degree of scale is given by the abandoned bike. The orange stains on the ground would seem to indicate iron content. A steady trickle of water flows down the stream leading away. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Bedfordshire

After taking directions I took the footpath opposite the Cross Keys pub; turning right and then left brought me to the local school (also Holywell). Another footpath leads off to the right into a recreation ground. Sticking to the left hand side of the field, next to the school, I crossed a small gulley by some steps and on to another footpath. Turning left, a dog walker gave me some more directions and the well was revealed in a hollow on the right. A further path branching off to the right gave a better view. It is more of a spring, a leaf filled hollow not improved by a dumped bike.

On the positive side, the water still flows and the orange stains show that it is iron containing. It is pretty boggy - my stick sunk in over a foot when I tried out the ground.
