Misc. Earthwork in Yorkshire (East)

Access: the Wolds Way footpath runs along part of the monument.

The cross dyke on Knapton Wold divides off the western end of the Wold and is associated with the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age settlement at Staple Howe. The dyke has an overall width of 24m, so is a distinct landmark. It has a pair of parallel ditches, each 8m wide by up to 1.5m deep, with a 0.5m high bank between them and flanked by a 0.5m high bank on each side. The outer banks have been eroded over by ploughing so it will have been slightly wider originally. It may have extended further down the hill north slightly and also south down towards Wintringham.

Very few cross dykes have survived so all well-preserved examples are considered to be of national importance. They are part of major boundaries constructed in the Middle and Later Bronze Age, which include enigmatic long and massive pit-alignments. Some of these extend over 5 kilometres, and consist of two metres square, two metres deep pits at metre intervals with an earth bank on either side.

A similar cross dyke runs 2km to the east at West Heslerton wold.
