St John the Baptist's Well
St John the Baptist's Well submitted by DavidCWoods : SU956595 Ample evidence of the orange staining suggesting iron salts (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well in Surrey.
According to the notice beside it, a Grade 2 Listed Building.

Situated beside a footpath, accessed opposite Clews Farm in Clews Lane. The notice says that "the well has never run dry nor frozen up...there is evidence from the Pyrford Charter Bounds (956 AD) suggesting that a church had been constructed near the well.....The spring water from the Holy Well contains significant amounts of dissolved iron and was once said to benefit sufferers from eye trouble and various other complaints...The stonework is mainly of heathstone, a sarsen stone found locally and is used in the construction of parts of many churches in this area"

St John the Baptist's Well (Fodderty)
St John the Baptist's Well (Fodderty) submitted by KiwiBetsy : View from the well. This was taken on June 13th 2006, the year of the late spring ….. just look at the bluebells. (2 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)

St John the Baptist's Well (Fodderty)
St John the Baptist's Well (Fodderty) submitted by KiwiBetsy : To find St John the Baptist’s Well take the A834 west from Dingwall towards Strathpeffer. Just before the Fodderty Church turn left onto a lane passing some houses including Fodderty Lodge. Park at the end near the last house and continue straight ahead on foot past some trees and over a bridge. On your right a stile takes you over a fence and you are at the bottom of the steep direct route the ... (1 comment - Vote or comment on this photo)

St John the Baptist's Well
St John the Baptist's Well submitted by DavidCWoods : SU956595 A flight of steps leads down from the footpath to the well. The footpath continues across another field to the churchyard of St John the Baptist, Bisley - this, according to the notice, is "far removed from the developed part of the village, which suggests that it may well be located on the site of the original pre-Saxon building" (Vote or comment on this photo)

St John the Baptist's Well (Fodderty) submitted by KiwiBetsy : In recent times someone thought enough of this well to make it a sign.

St John the Baptist's Well (Fodderty)
St John the Baptist's Well (Fodderty) submitted by KiwiBetsy : The name Tobar nan Ceann or 'Well of the Heads' is still known locally but there is no surety that they are one in the same. A local resident told us a story relating, presumably, to this well ….. William Munro of Foulis, probably in some judicial capacity, led a group of Munros, Dingwalls and MacCullochs to attack Hector Mackenzie, probably at Kinnellan near Strathpeffer. On their return, th...

St John the Baptist's Well (Fodderty)
St John the Baptist's Well (Fodderty) submitted by KiwiBetsy : It was, until about 50 years ago, resorted to by the sick and ‘maniacs’ who would always leave a thread or rag on a nearby bush. It is a spring that runs into two stone lined pools and then drains away down the hill.

St John the Baptist's Well
St John the Baptist's Well submitted by DavidCWoods : SU956595 There is stagnant water in the top of the well but a pipe issueing water from the side. Apparently, Restoration was undertaken by volunteers in 2002.
