The 'Montem' mound at Salt Hill in Berkshire is 34m diameter and 6m high. It has been found to be Anglo-Saxon, not Norman. Carbon dating of charcoal and burnt wheat grains gave a date range of 425-765 AD, making this mound contemporary with Taeppa’s mound just a few miles upstream on the Thames, and also with the Sutton Hoo ship burial.

Taeppa’s mound is smaller than Montem, being 24m diameter, 4.5m high, but both mounds would have been slightly larger originally.

Montem mound is sited on a northern branch of the Thames. On the southern branch at Eton, there was a substantial 2m wide timber bridge dated 1520 - 1220 BC, one of the earliest bridges found on the Thames. The mound at Slough, then, was near to a major Thames crossing.

Audio: 'The Sutton Hoo of Slough' [groan - MegP Ed] by Andy B on Monday, 31 July 2017

Could a mound in the middle of Slough really be a Saxon burial site? Jim Leary who leads the Round Mounds Project at the University of Reading thinks there’s every chance it might be. He and his fellow researchers have found that by taking a sample core through the middle of similar mounds what were once thought of as Norman mottes can be hundreds of years earlier in origin.
