The site of a lost burial mound. One of a larger barrow cemetery going by the archaeological report. Tracking the grid reference coordinates, I found myself stepping closer and closer to this mound in the playground. Had the slide been positioned just a few metres further to the east, it would have been directly on top of the original Neolithic burial mound. One must wonder if the estate planners were aware of this, as it seems a serendipitous placement, or perhaps just a synchronous secret whispered below the astroturf, between past and present.
Excavations revealed not just the ring ditch of the barrow but also early medieval wheel ruts cutting right across the feature, indicating that by this time, the mound was levelled and no longer visible. It would have been fascinating to witness the decision made to plough out the mound and destroy it when it was no longer considered relevant or sacred. Perhaps farming needs were greater than heritage.
However, contemporaneous mounds throughout Britain had been appropriated as places of assembly, or moot mounds, as gathering spaces for local business by this point. These meetings established the early administrative and political structures we have in place today. The choice of these mounds for such important community activities show they still featured in the minds of societies as significant locations, perhaps bridging the world of the living with the dead, to bring the gravitas of ancestral blessing to any decisions made.
