Whilst this is a tenth century wayside cross which has ended up in a garden, it looks like for a period of time it also acted as a churchyard cross. This was when in the twelfth century a chapel (long since gone) dedicated to All Saints was built nearby by Aschetine of Hawkesgarth (Hawsker). This was in the time of Benedict who was Abbot of Whitby from (1139 – 1148).
