Holy Well or Sacred Spring in West Sussex

Although it lies within Petworth parish, Virgin Mary Spring (a highly distinctive name) is right on the boundary, and the easiest way of getting there is to follow the footpath that runs northwest from the road through Byworth just uphill from the Black Horse inn, down the hill and over a small bridge (it often gets muddy). Turn left on the far bank of the stream and the well appears after a hundred yards or so. The water pours from a pipe set into the bank above, into a stone-lined pool built up with old brick and stone and reinforced on one side with concrete. The well appears on the Ordnance Survey map but there are (as yet) no other historical details known. The parish church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and parishioners have lately visited the well to be ceremonially blessed with the water.
