Jacobs Well is thought to pre-date the current town, as it is mentioned in historical memoirs from a time when the town was little more than a hamlet. The people then believed the well to pre-date even those few buildings.

The well soon came under the ownership of a local farm. Later, the field containing the well was gifted to the Catholic church, and the well fell under their jurisdiction. Now the well, with a more modern well-house, stands within the grounds of the church of St Edward the Confessor, and can be accessed via the graveyard.

This is St Edward's Well.

This from the HER

The old manor house of Sutton, formerly a Royal possession, was in ruins by 1329. It stood near St Edward's Chapel (TQ 00455380) a quarter of a mile from Sutton Place in Manor Field. Traces exist of foundations, encaustic tiles and an old well. (3-4)

The water-filled well is preserved within the N.W. corner of a new walled-in extension to the graveyard of St. Edwards Church. A new stone parapet and steps have been erected around the top and the visible parts of the shaft are lined with stone passing into brick below. The only visible evidence of buildings in the area is a
general scatter of broken Md. roof tile in the field to the W. (5)
