Lady Well (Ancaster)
Lady Well (Ancaster) submitted by Tricks : The spring known as the Ladywell in the woods to the south of Ancaster. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Lincolnshire. The O/S map marks a small pool at the cross-roads as the Lady Well. It is possible that the spring was known in Roman and pre-Roman times as the settlement was a Roman station. Roman credentials have been strengthened since Time Team’s research.

Leland notes that there was an old chapel dedicated to St. Mary and a hermitage. In Victorian times the water was tapped as a source of water for the village and a large cistern and pipe system established. This was removed and the well had become a boggy area, finally it was restored. However in the 1990s as a result of the spring being used to stock fish the well was lined with clay to prevent water loss.

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) also features a page for this holy well - see their entry for Lady Well, Ancaster, Lincolnshire, which has a photograph of the pool (which is on private land, but can be seen to the right of the entrance to the reserve) and directions for finding the well pool.

The well is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No, 325930, the summary of which reads: "A spring in Dovecote Close, Ancaster is known as Lady Well. It is said that a chapel mentioned by Leland was also in this field, but the chapel is not in the same field as the spring, and it would appear that .... has misinterpreted Leland, Lady Well is reputed to have been the water supply of the Roman town of Ancaster. This is a natural spring, with no masonry evident." Please note the grid reference given by Pastscape is SK 9838 4327. The grid reference given by The Northern Antiquarian, SK 9840 4332, is right in the middle of the well pool.

I think there are some errors in the description. The pool described is not the spring. The pool was dug by the local farm owner in the 1960s to encourage wildfowl. The spring itself which feeds it is maybe 50 yards or so further back in the woods and is now covered in part by a modern concrete cistern.

As a result the grid reference given The Northern Antiquarian is incorrect.
