Ashwell submitted by HOLYWELL : The Ashwell still survives unlike other wells in the village but not very attractively. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Sacred Spring in Lincolnshire

Enclosed rather unromantically in a metal cage, the spring still flows through a predominantly concrete structure at some force. Local legend states that whosoever would drink its waters would have the desire to live there forever in the village. This I was unable to determine as the cage prevents the visitor from sampling its waters. It is mentioned in the manor records early in the sixteenth century but may be lot older, but any ash tree nearby has long gone.

Ashwell Wishing Well
Ashwell Wishing Well submitted by bscwilde : The stonework enclosure is formed into an embankment of the adjoining field, amongst ash trees. This water source may have given the village its name (there are quite a number of Ashwells around the UK and there may be some tie-in between 'healing waters' and 'sacred groves', although that is far from proven here. There are other explanations in the etymology and this is not the only local water... (Vote or comment on this photo)
