The Devil's stone (Bedfordshire)
The Devil's stone (Bedfordshire) submitted by HOLYWELL : The enigmatic and rather short standing stone called The Devil's stone. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This village boasts what is a rare megalith in Bedfordshire, a supposed standing stone called the Devil's stone or Jumpstone. Originally there were three of them in a row but only one still stands to the south of the church.

Local legend states that the stones indicated a series of jumps made by the devil or alternative where a man was turned to stone by playing leapfrog on a Sunday. The church has an unusual separated tower which is also blamed on the Devil who tried to carry it away and finding it too heavy dropped it.

Although generally described as a standing stone its shape suggests a Roman milestone.

This stone is no longer there, since the landscaping was done for the millenium park. I live directly opposite it, and remember seeing it ten years ago, but it has gone now.
