Beacon Howes (Staintondale)
Beacon Howes (Staintondale) submitted by johndhunter : Beacon Howes at NZ 97303 01095 – Viewed looking north from the Scarborough Road, April 2013. Whilst reduced they are still clearly visible for what they are (Vote or comment on this photo)
Round Barrow(s) in Yorkshire (North)

Two bronze age round barrows in a prominent position overlooking the sea. The western barrow at NZ 97282 01108 is in a field whilst the smaller eastern barrow 30m away at NZ 97316 01078 is at the edge of the field and has had a wall built across its middle (north/south) dividing it between two fields. This has resulted in damage to it on the eastern side of the wall where it has been reduced due to ploughing.

These barrows are Historic England List Entry Number 1020229 which tells us that the western barrow is 18m in diameter and 1.3m high whilst the eastern barrow is 15m in diameter and 0.75m high. It also tells us that originally both barrows were surrounded by a ditch up to 3m wide but this has been filled in and is no longer visible

Pastscape also has information at Monument 29622

It may be that these barrows were originally named named Robin Hood’s Butts. See the comments section at the bottom of the ROBIN HOOD’S BUTTS site page for further information.
