(User Info | Send a Message)
It is a Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age cross dyke, basically an earthwork (bank + ditch) cuting the promontory (of course not all cross dykes are located on promontories). Function of the cross dykes is unsure, some of them could be associated with hillforts, but in several cases I know they are earlier. Function of the boundary marker seems to be plausible. One of the best preserved cross dykes, wich is located on Hengistbury Head (Dorset) protected an area where traces of activity can be traced back to the Palaeolithic. In Iron Age it was probably a place of trade.

In this case the location is rather puzzling - it was dug through the slope of Chantry Hill, in a position which is very poor in terms of defence.

Is this a settlement?, camp?, fort similar to Cissbury, or just flint mines?
