Ancient Settlement in Surrey

A Mesolithic 'pit dwelling', protected by a small building. Small museum on site. Requires permission to visit, although there are occasional open-days. Unique.

Abinger Manor, Abinger Common, Hollow Lane submitted by Andy B : Hollow Lane is cut deeply into the sandstone. Quite a treacherous drive, it leads up to the Mesolithic Dwelling and Abinger Common village. Could this be a prehistoric trackway, it certainly feels ancient. (Vote or comment on this photo)

More information on the Mesolithic by Andy B on Wednesday, 31 March 2004
(User Info | Send a Message)
Apparently archaeologists now doubt that Mesolithic people lived in pits, but built proper shelters. Well would you?! What this hole in the ground that ended up full of flints was is still something of a mystery. Some sort of ancient rubbish tip presumably. And it may only be Neolithic. See our Culverwell page and links for more information on the Mesolithic.
