Prehistoric and ancient settlement in Murcia

The settlement of Peña Negra is situated on a high en steep ridge in a mining area.
It is dated to Late Bronze Age and Iron Age. Later it was part of a Phoenician trading route and it was in use untill the 6th century AC.
Different sectors of the settlement were excavated.
The Citadel is in a central and dominant position, together with the largest buildings, which were somentimes used as storehouses. There are a few unique buildings, including places for worshipping. The residential and artisan areas were distributed over the rest of the settlement, especially the lower areas. The remains of fortifications have also been identified, although most of them are eroded.
A harsh place to live, of course along a river, but with steep hills.
It can be visited 24 hours. Excavations were in 2017.
It was also occupied in the Islamitic Period and known as Herna.
