Re: Worthing Museum by Anonymous on Sunday, 26 March 2006
If the fine Museum at Worthing is becoming too expensive to run, then maybe we should consider reducing the scandalously generous incomes of our local councillors? For it is they who make the loudest noises in criticism of the Museum.

With just days until our petition supporting Worthing Museum & Art Gallery has to be presented to the council, it looks like the signatures are going to total over 6000.

We've already reached 5826 and know that many people have yet to return forms, either to 18 Chancton View Road, Worthing, BN11 5JR or to the Museum & Art Gallery.

From 11am - 12 noon this Saturday, 31st January, we'll be staging one last gathering outside the Museum & Art Gallery in Chapel Road, and the Bamboo Band will be joining us to perform their new calypso, Save The Museum. Click here to read more; and don't forget to leave your comments ... http://www.artistsandmakers.com/article.php?story=20040127143539955

We'd also like as many supporters as possible to join us when we present our petition, at the Council's Executive Meeting on Tuesday 3rd February. Due to the expected high turn-out, this meeting will be held at The Assembly Hall, from 6pm.

See you on Saturday ...

Re: Worthing Museum under threat of closure by Andy B on Monday, 05 January 2004

From: Chris Drake

Please find attached a plea for support from the staff of Worthing Museum
and Art Gallery, Worthing, West Sussex.

The museum has just been informed that its future from April 04 will be
decided by a process of public consultation. 3000 local residents will be
targeted, by questionnaire, to decide whether they will accept higher
council tax to maintain current services, or decide which council services
from short list of other Leisure and cultural services will be closed. The
list includes the main swimming pool (due to be replaced in 4-6 years),
"some" public toilets, the Arts Development Officer post and budget, the
advertising and promotions budget for the town's theatres, and freezing
"some" staff vacancies. Other residents, concerned individuals and groups,
and service users will also have an opportunity to respond via the
questionnaire, which can be picked up at a variety of WBC offices, via the
website (or email) or by sending letter of support,

It is acknowledged that the service is broadly 'excellent', and it's just
the question of the museum's total annual budget and relative lack of
generated income that has put it in the frame. The consultation period will
last for c.6 weeks, and the decision will be made in mid-Feb 04.

As you will see, the museum staff would welcome all letters of support,
particularly from those who have used the services personally or
professionally. Worthing Museum & Art Gallery is a very significant service
in the county, with collections of national and international importance and
a very wide range of audiences. Its closure will have an impact on the
services you offer or promote, and may well impact on your own resources, if
queries and donations etc are diverted to your services.

If you require more information, please contact Ann or myself

With thanks
