Ancient Cross in Yorkshire (East)
St Elgin's church is located at the far western side of the village by the B1249 road halfway between Skpsea and Driffield. The church houses an Anglo-Saxon cross-head. Nothing is known about St Elgin - the church was originally dedicated to St Helen.
In the church there is a millstone grit cross-head dating from the late Anglo-Saxon age 9th-11th century. It is described by J.Lang in his work 'Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Sculpture' iii.187-9, illus, as "the most decorated and stylish in east Yorkshire". The highly decorated cross-head and a shaft were dug up in the vicarage garden in 1909 and later brought into the church; the shaft was lost or stolen, perhaps being put in to use as a gatepost or something similar in the area.
