Hi, does anyone have any information about a bunker or underground facility on the hill? There are trap doors on the top of the hill that appear to lead somewhere underground.

I too was a frequent visitor to Horsendon Hill, flew kites, walked the dog, explored and always intrigued with the lore of Hengist and Horsa from a 12-13yr. old's mind.
Spent many visits in the early '50s, eating winkles in the parking lot of the Ballot Box Pub, whilst my parents went in for a brew. Currently living in one of the 'colonies' ('50s), but still have fond memories of 'home'.

I too grew up in Perivale 1935 to 1960 and played on Horsenden hill as a child as often as time allowed, playing "cops & robbers" and "cowboys & Indians" .
The ruined house opposite the old Ballot Box we used to call the "Chinks' House" and
explored among the undergrowth and remember the mosaic floor tiles.

There is now an underground water storage reservoir on the hillside.

My youngest Son, a potter, fired me a beautiful small inscribed mug made from Horsenden clay.

I visit the Hill nearly every time I am in the UK, ... many fond memories of play friends
& fun on the Hill & Woods.

Re: Horsenden Hill by Anonymous on Saturday, 18 December 2010
I used to live in Horsenden Lane North, went to the now demolished infants and junior school there,ok it has been rebuilt now. Had great fun in the fields and on Horsenden Hill as a nipper. Found a huge air raid shelter at the foot of Horsenden Hill, older friends had got wind of it and dug it out! Soon the council came along and sadly filled the lot with concrete, the main entrance and all the hatches capped. Up the road the Ballot Box pub, further still, the remains of the original pub after it was bombed in WWII across the other side of the road was mosaic tiled flooring from a house that once stood there. Memories. AL.

I lived Benetts Avenue 1943-1950, great tobogganing on the Hill, good fishing (by dragnet) for Roach and Gudgeon in the Canal , 1947 a memorable winter for ice games on the frozen Canal.Halcyon Days. Wazza.

I think you should get your facts straight. Middlesex has not been an official county for about 30 years...

I think you should get your facts straight! Horsenden Hill is in Middlesex and is in fact the second highest point in the county after Harrow Hill

Third, Stanmore Common is the highest point in the County. It is of course also the third highest point in London and if you look east, the next place which is as high is I believe in the Urals!

Hi, there,
I was brought up near Horsenden Hill! A favourite sunday walk - always had good vibes there. The remains of wartime gun emplacements right on the top provided us with a modern "hill fort" to play on.
The only bit of local lore I remember was that we used to say it was Hengists`s tomb.
Love,
Liz
