Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley)
Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley) submitted by Anne T : A close up of the stone and the way the water is channelled to it, around it and from it. A really lovely sight and the stone is a real landmark in the landscape.

Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley)
Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley) submitted by Anne T : Walking slightly further west along the south side of the Holywell Burn gorge (gully), looking back at the stone at its head, and the stone wall, under which the spring water gushes.

Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley)
Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley) submitted by Anne T : From further west along the gorge, looking back at the tall stone at its head, the water is channelled from the stone wall along the ground to the front of the rock, making it look as if this rock is the source of the water, and the wellhead.

Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley)
Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley) submitted by Anne T : is it my imagination (probably!) but as the sun shone on this stone by my feet, it looked as if there were 3 narrow, partial rings. For a moment I got quite excited at the possibility of a new rock art find, but the sun went in, and I thought 'no'. Curious to see what others think?? (3 comments)

Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley)
Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley) submitted by Anne T : Just below the stone, the waters of the Holywell Burn tumble into the gorge below. We wondered if the gorge was part of an ancient glaciation feature as the burn seemed too small to have cut away this amount of rock.

Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley)
Mill Knock Chalybeate Well (Birtley) submitted by Anne T : First view of the small gorge which has formed by the Holywell Burn, west of the single track road just south of Mill Knock Quarry. The large stone which pokes up at the head of the gorge appears (from a distance) to be the source of the water.
