Tutankhamun: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh exhibition, currently at the Saatchi Gallery in London. With the exhibition sadly closed due to the COVID-19 virus, I am posting some pictures taken when we visited on 28th January 2020. The exhibition was due to continue until 9th May 2020, but was closed on 28th March and it is unclear whether it will be able to reopen.

There have been mixed reviews, with many people finding it difficult to get close enough to view the exhibits properly. We were fortunate in our timing, so encountered only a couple of school groups!

The exhibits were very impressive, but it was difficult to get a real sense of 'context' until nearly half way round. Prior to that, there were lots of exquisite, gleaming artifacts in display cases, leaving one to wonder how on earth such treasures could have survived in that state - and how could they all have possibly been in the tomb!

Well after half way round, there was picture of the tomb complex and a model. From this, it became clear that most of the artifacts were packed into 2 'rooms', jumbled together and stacked up. Their condition on discovery had been impressive, but degraded and dusty etc. The sheer number of some items was unexpected, such as the number of walking canes, the numerous minature statues of slaves and workers (ready to come back to life in the afterworld to make sure the king had everything he needed), and the wide range of furniture etc.

One thing which was missing - there was no simple guide, and the official Programme was excessively expensive. Few people who paid for the optional Audio Guide found it worth renting - only a small number of the exhibits actually had an audio description. To help make sense of the photos I will be posting, this picture was taken of the display showing the layout of the tomb.

Another thing I guess people might not realise is that this was intended to be the last time these treasures will be allowed out of Egypt, as the world-wide tour is intended to raise enough money to build a permanent museum for it all.

Thank you so much PAB for posting such a wonderful selection of excellent photos of this exhibition. The artefacts are AWEsome! How lucky that you were able to get close enough to capture the quality of these amazing items. What luck you went when you did!
The experience must have had quite an effect on both of you.

Yes, Angie - we were glad we'd gone. We did the optional Virtual Reality experience as well (we don't get to London more than every other decade, so thought we'd make the most of it!). That was very good - moving down the entrance slope and going into each chamber as Carter would have seen each.
