Baucouyé Tumuli
Baucouyé Tumuli submitted by Nick- : 14th August 2006 Looking South East at the tumuli....In the background are the foothills of the Pyrénées. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Tumuli in Aquitaine:Pyrénées-Atlantiques. 5.5 kms SW from the 'Menhir du Ger'. 1.2 kms South , from the old Route Nationale road from Tarbes to Pau. The site is approached along lanes and level stony tracks.
Shown on the IGN 1:25000 Série Bleue , N°:1645E 'Ger' map.

On this map are marked two 'tumuli', in an area marked as 'Baucouyé'. IGN is fairly notorious (or so I have been told) for misnaming sites. (Some 'tumuli' in the departement of the Gers32 shown on IGN maps, are actually medieaval castle mottes!)
In this case the site markings appear accurate.(?)

This site is pretty near the Autoroute from Toulouse to Biarritz, so the sound of the traffic , combined with the rustling of the rather sinister maize, makes the 'ambiance' questionable.......

I have named these 'Baucouyé Tumuli' as they are in this area (as marked on the map). I ought to ask locally........

IMPORTANT NOTE :- Position of site taken from a detailed map source.

Baucouyé Tumuli
Baucouyé Tumuli submitted by Nick- : One of the two tumuli marked on the map.Taken looking due West. I am standing some way (15m?) in front of the tumulus (my height 1m93/6'4"). The tumulus is aproximately 22 metres in diameter. I could find no evidence of a 2nd tumulus ....It may be under the maize on either side of the field.... (the maize behind the tumulus, or behind the camera). (4 comments - Vote or comment on this photo)
