Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Greater London

The Northern Antiquarian (TNA) features a page for this now lost well - see their page for Skinners Well, Finsbury, London.

The first mention of this well is from a 1197 account, which reads: "Skinners’ Well is there described as lying in the valley between the Nun’s Priory and the Holeburn, in which was a large fish-pond…"

Stow’s Survey (of 1720) say:‘Skinners’ Well is almost quite lost ... But I am certainly informed by a knowing parishioner that it lies to the west of the church (of St. James, Clerkenwell), enclosed within certain houses there.’ The parish would fain recover the well again, but cannot tell where the pipes lie. But Dr Rogers, who formerly lived in an house there, showed Mr Edmund Howard…marks in a wall in the close where, as he affirmed, the pipes lay, that it might be known after his death."

Septimus Sunderland also mentioned in his 1915 publication that "Mystery Play were performed yearly around (the well) by the Skinners of London" in 1603.

Note: Does anyone have any information, illustrations or a more accurate location for this well?

Well done ANN T for the information. I am reading John Stow’s, survey of London at this moment, but continually get side tracked, looking up the history of the lost wells. At this rate of reading the river Thames would have dried up long before I have finished the book. Thanks again for the information.
Lost in my book.

Thanks for making contact, Anonymous. I wish I could take the credit for tracking the information down, but it was largely Paul Bennett of the Northern Antiquarian who was responsible.

I would love to be able to find Stow's documentation - lucky you for having it - it sounds absolutely fascinating. I'm currently getting myself lost with all the wells and holy wells of the Scottish Borders, Northumberland and North Yorkshire, never mind being able to 'head down south' for London wells! One day ...

And I'm sure the Thames won't dry up that quickly … will it??? Happy reading, and if you have any photographs or information about those London wells, we'd be delighted to see any contributions you'd like to submit. Thanks again!
