Holy Well or Sacred Spring in Lincolnshire
Just found below the road is the Newell an ancient spring which flows through some old brickwork to form a stream. The water from this spring was used until the 1800s for a strange custom called washing 'Molly Grime'. She is an effigy in the church and this was ceremonally washed by local women on Good Friday. The origin of the custom is unclear but it is suggestive of pagan practices. The term Molly Grime is used locally to describe a dirty faced child.
