Anne T visited on 27th Aug 2019 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 4 Access: 5 Greystoke Village Cross: We've been to this area before, on the hunt for the possible Newbeggin Stone Rows, but never driven into this very pretty little village. We left this until the last stop of the day (just before the rain started to hurl down), after having seen the Eyekeld Well, the village Church and the Sanctuary Stone. There are parts of the original medieval cross built into this largely 'modern' structure. Whilst Pastscape and HE say the socket stone is original, it looked like the top three steps were original (the new socket stone had chamfered and shaped corners and was a much brighter/less weathered stone than the rest).

Ancient Cross in Cumbria

This is largely a modern cross which retains part of its a medieval pedestal and its original socket stone. Standing at the eastern end of the triangular village green, it is recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 11306 and listed as Historic England List ID 1326705.

Pastscape tells us that the "present cross incorporates the socket stone and two base steps of the original cross". Historic England adds the octagonal plinth is made up of 5 steps, the top 2 of which are original, "surmounted by a square base and tapered chamfered shaft with floriated head".

HE goes on to say: 'The parish burial records say: "(In) 1623, Nov 8, Buried Jo Nicholson the yonge childe of a poore beggar of the pishe (parish) of Broughton, which childe died at the Towne Crosse in Graistoke" which shows that the cross is older than this date.'

This is a very pretty little village, with the village green pretty much still the centre for village activities at the time of our visit with its pubs immediately adjacent.
