Early Christian Sculptured Stone in Veneto

When visiting Verona a single pass gives access (with free Audioguide) to the four main churches in the city centre: the Cathedral (Duomo), San Zeno, Sant'Anastasia and San Fermo.

Each church offers an insight into the history of Verona, very often it is possible to see older frescos emerging from underneath more "recent" ones.
The most interesting archaeological findings can be seen in the Cathedral complex, which includes the Baptistery of san Giovanni in Fonte, the Cathedral itself and the Church of Sant'Elena.
The latter was originally built in the 9th Century, above the remains of a 4th and a 5th Century Paleo-Christian Basilica, of which we can today still admire the mosaic floor. Before the first Basilica was built, Roman used this area for their Baths and a Temple to Minerva.

The Romanesque church of San Zeno offers some interesting stone work in the 10th Century crypt, and noticeable are the cup marks all over the bas-relief sculptures next to the main entrance (probably people attributed thaumaturgical powers to the dust from the statues).
Sant'Anastasia is famous for its red marble decorations (and don't miss the Saint George and the Princess fresco).
In San Fermo fragments of the 765AD church are visible in the crypt (together with impressive XII Century frescos)
