Details of Site:
There were a total of ninety-nine courtyards at the medieval peak of this site, of which only fifteen survive today: Bhaktapur's Durbar Square in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley is one of the finest concentrations of Newari pagoda architecture anywhere. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it was founded in 865 CE and is still a 'living city'.
The city preserves one of the finest concentrations of medieval Newari architecture in Nepal, including multi-tiered pagoda temples, carved wooden windows and doorways, and brick-paved squares. Key monuments include the Nyatapola Temple (a five-storey pagoda built in 1702 CE, the tallest temple in Nepal), the 55-Window Palace, and the Vatsala Temple with its famous bell.
Bhaktapur was severely damaged by the April 2015 earthquake (magnitude 7.8), which destroyed or damaged many of its historic buildings. Restoration work continues. Despite the earthquake damage, the city retains its extraordinary character - a living medieval town where daily life continues among temples and palaces much as it has for centuries.
The Newari civilisation of the Kathmandu Valley developed a distinctive urban culture combining Hindu and Buddhist elements, expressed in architecture, metalwork, and wood carving of exceptional quality. Bhaktapur is the best-preserved example of this tradition. The city was the capital of the Malla kingdom from the 14th to the late 15th century CE, and remained an independent kingdom until the Gorkha conquest of 1769 CE.
Finds Location
Bhaktapur National Art Museum (in the 55-Window Palace complex on Durbar Square) holds the principal collection of Bhaktapur sculpture, painting, and metalwork. The National Museum of Nepal in Kathmandu also holds Newari material.
